LED torchlights can be bought at places like Daiso, Army Market, Home-Fix, NTUC, 7-11, etc.

Remember to make sure your phone is fully charged before coming to Pink Dot 2013. The LED app can take up quite a bit of battery power.

3. Other methods that may not work
We’ve done some testing ourselves. Here are a few methods that didn’t work for us!
1. Using a pink plastic bag to replace pink cellophane paper: The colour of the light is not pink enough.
2. Using the screen of a smart phone to display a pink image: The screen is not bright enough to be seen from the vantage point camera.
3. Using light sticks: light sticks are also not bright enough to be seen from the camera. But please be creative and make a nicely-lit costume!

We believe the emotions portrayed in the video are universal; we hope the video speaks to you regardless of your sexual orientation or gender identity.

This video proved to be the most logistically challenging one we have made yet. Without our dedicated cast and crew who volunteered their services and time, and our generous sponsors, it would not have been possible. A big THANK YOU to all!

See you at Pink Dot 2013!

Growing Support for the Freedom to Love

CooperVision, J.P. Morgan, PARKROYAL and The Gunnery join Google and Barclays to lead Pink Dot’s list of corporate and community supporters for 2013

SINGAPORE, 23 May 2013 – Global financial firm J.P. Morgan, local hotel PARKROYAL on Pickering, popular contact lens specialist CooperVision and audio branding agency The Gunnery, have come on board as Corporate Contributors of Pink Dot 2013, an annual event campaigning for diversity and inclusiveness while fostering understanding for the basic human need to love and be loved, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. They join a growing list that includes search engine giant Google and international banking group Barclays.

For some contributors, supporting Pink Dot is part of their internal diversity programme as well as a way to reach out to the diverse communities they support.

“Diversity at the workplace is an essential component of the culture at Google. Possessing the best talent is just one facet of being a great company, and Google firmly believes that having a diversity of viewpoints and beliefs can lead to some really brilliant and inspiring ideas that will benefit us all in the long term,” said Keerthana Mohan, APAC Diversity and Inclusion Manager at Google, Pink Dot’s Pioneer Contributor since 2010. “With the world becoming more interconnected, we recognise and appreciate the sheer diversity of the world around us by supporting a worthy cause like Pink Dot’s.”

Barclays – committing itself to supporting Pink Dot for the second year – likewise believes in offering equal opportunities to employees. Simon Croxford, who is Asia Co-Head of Barclays LGBT employee network Spectrum and is based in Singapore said: “It is becoming more evident that companies with diverse teams make wiser decisions and better reflect the clients they serve and communities they are part of. We at Barclays pride ourselves on our belief that employees should be respected for their talents and contributions and that everyone deserves to be offered the same opportunities to be successful, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Four headlining new corporate contributors – J. P. Morgan, PARKROYAL on Pickering, CooperVision and The Gunnery – likewise share in the vision of an inclusive and diverse Singapore in which Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Singaporeans can happily call Home.

“J.P Morgan is committed to promoting and creating an inclusive work environment because we understand that with diversity comes strength. Employees with different perspectives and experiences are essential for firms if they are to succeed. J.P. Morgan has an open culture that respects all individuals regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity and we are very proud to be associated with the Pink Dot event this year,” said Paul Echart, J.P. Morgan’s Chief Administrative Officer for Singapore”

“CooperVision believes in and embraces diversity. We value the uniqueness of each individual. It is through varied perspectives combined with an open environment that our people produce great ideas and creative and inspiring solutions. This belief is reflected in our company’s tagline “Live Brightly!”. We encourage our people to shine in their individuality and be passionate in bringing this positive spirit to enliven our customers and the communities we serve,” said Ms Jo-Ann Choo, Director of Marketing, CooperVision. “Supporting Pink Dot is one way to share our beliefs.”

“As a local creative audio branding agency, our love of music and sound translates into inspired results. We are proud to be helping Pink Dot broadcast its message of love and acceptance to a growing number of Singaporeans every year,” said Mr Azmi Jaffar, Executive Producer, The Gunnery.

For PARKROYAL on Pickering, supporting Pink Dot is a natural extension of being a new member of the vibrant community that surrounds the iconic Hong Lim Park.

“PARKROYAL on Pickering is an award winning hotel located right in the heart of Chinatown and across from the historically rich and diverse Hong Lim Park,” said Mr Lee Kin Seng, PARKROYAL on Pickering’s Director of Marketing Communications. “We promise our guests a local connection to the community around us. This is the first Pink Dot that PARKROYAL’s guests will be able to view from our rooms and we are excited at being able to partake in and share this spirit of diversity and inclusiveness with our guests.”

Pink Dot 2013’s corporate contributors are joined by food & beverage sponsors like ShareTea and Nando’s, as well as companies who have offered their pro bono services like Positive Events and founding sponsor Fridae.com.

The aid of contributors – both corporate organisations and individual donors – go a long way toward helping mitigate logistical and operational costs of organising Pink Dot.

“The growing number of companies who are coming out and supporting social movements like Pink Dot is humbling,” said Paerin Choa, spokesperson for Pink Dot Sg. “Increasingly, corporate entities are recognising the importance of values like inclusiveness and diversity, not just in the creation of a good working environment for employees, but also as a gesture of goodwill to clients and customers.”

About Pink Dot Sg

Pink Dot Sg is a non-profit movement started by a group of individuals who care deeply about the place that LGBT Singaporeans call home. Why Pink? Because it is a blend of red and white – the colour of Singapore’s flag. It is also the colour of our national identification cards. More importantly, Pink Dot Sg stands for a Singapore in which all Singaporeans, regardless of their sexual orientation, are free to love and be loved. 2,500 people supported this cause in 2009. In 2010, this nearly doubled to 4,000. In 2011, over 10,000 participants turned up, while 2012 saw the largest number of Singaporeans and permanent residents turning up to date, at 15,000. This consistently ranks Pink Dot as the largest gathering since the inception of the Speakers’ Corner in 2000.

Singapore, May 23, 2013 – Marking its milestone fifth edition this year, Pink Dot 2013 aims to takes the message of inclusivity and diversity to Singaporeans far and wide – quite literally, bringing it Home – with the launch of a new campaign video.

In a shift from the short film format characteristic of the previous two iterations, this year’s campaign video examines moments poignant and painful, as seen through the eyes of three protagonists in portrayals based on true-to-life experiences. Set to the heartwarming lyrics of one of the country’s most recognisable songs, ‘Home’, written and sung by the multi-talented Dick Lee, the video – sharing the same title as the song, and directed by acclaimed homegrown filmmaker Boo Junfeng – touches on issues faced by LGBT people in Singapore, including love, family acceptance, transphobia and personal loss.

‘Home’ will continue to build on the successes of past campaign videos, aiming to raise public awareness of topics important to the LGBT community, such as discrimination, social stigma, and the continued existence of Section 377a of the Penal Code and its social impact.

“This year, we wanted to tell the stories that define what home is to many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in this country. Naturally, we found inspiration in ‘Home’, an evergreen National Day song that a lot of Singaporeans grew up with,” said Junfeng

“We found new meaning in the lyrics as we listened to the familiar tune, thinking about the stories we wanted to tell. About a woman coming home to a family who is not fully accepting of her sexuality, about a couple who grew old together in a society that can be more open-minded, about a young transgender person who is finding her place in a country she calls home. These are stories that reflect the realities in which many LGBT Singaporeans live.” Similar to last year’s edition, this year’s event will culminate in the formation of a pink dot of shimmering torches, light sticks and glowing mobile phones in the first hours of darkness. And as part of our continued engagement with local community groups and partners, the Pink Dot Community Tent will also be expanded to accommodate the growing number of community and corporate partners and supporters that have generously contributed to the celebrations.

And as a signifier of this quiet hope ‘Home’ embodies, Pink Dot 2013 aims to deliver a dramatic message of inclusivity and acceptance – a celebration of devotion, care, and a call to all LGBT Singaporeans to continue standing up for the Freedom to Love, in this place we call Home.

The campaign video will be available for viewing across Pink Dot Sg’s multiple online platforms:

1 May (Singapore) – Michelle Chia, Ivan Heng and Mark Richmond are the 2013 ambassadors of Pink Dot, an annual rally that raises awareness and foster deeper understanding of the basic human need to love and be loved, regardless of one’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Featured in an “Ambassador Video” that was launched today, Michelle, Ivan and Mark highlighted the importance of inclusiveness and acceptance for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

“We will like to thank Michelle, Ivan and Mark for coming onboard this year,” said Paerin Choa, Pink Dot’s spokesperson. “It is an act of courage and conviction to be willing to stand up and put themselves in the public spotlight. As allies or members of the LGBT community, they play a pivotal role in helping build bridges within the community as well as with the greater public.”

Since the first Pink Dot in 2009, Pink Dot ambassadors have come from a range of different backgrounds. They include popular radio host Rosalyn Lee; actresses Sharon Au, Neo Swee Lin and Tan Kheng Hua; and comedians the Dim Sum Dollies and Kumar.

“I have many friends who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, and they are no different from straight people,” said Michelle Chia, popular TV host and actress. “Many of these friends are in loving, happy relationships and I feel the need to speak up for them when nasty things are being directed at LGBT people. People should be allowed to be who they are and love who they want to love.”

“I want my LGBT friends to know that I care for their freedom to love and I am proud of this opportunity to be an ambassador for Pink Dot. An event like Pink Dot not only represents the acceptance of LGBT people but is very important for straight people like me because I want to live in a society that is inclusive and open-minded.”

Though support for LGBT people have grown tremendously in recent years, discrimination and prejudice is still prevalent in society, especially in schools and at the workplace.

“As a straight person, there is a lot that I take for granted,” said Mark Richmond, sportscaster. “When I look back at my life, I realised that LGBT people face a lot of discrimination that I did not, and this impacts their lives badly. Though Singapore is changing, discrimination still exists and much of it stems from ignorance and fear.”

“As a father, I want my child to grow up in a society that celebrates diversity and where it is ok to be different. I bring my family to Pink Dot because this is the one place and time in Singapore where people from the LGBT community and their family and friends can come together in a celebration of inclusivity, tolerance and love. It is important for my kid to see for himself the wonderful differences that make society rich, and for him to know not to discriminate against people just because of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

For many LGBT people, coming out remains difficult. Many still divide their personal and work lives, and live double lives in fear of being discriminated against.

“I knew I was different from an early age,” said Ivan Heng, acclaimed thespian and Artistic Director of theatre company W!ld Rice. “Growing up was a little confusing, frightening and lonely. And I know there are many LGBT people in Singapore even today who remain in the closet because of discrimination and fear, and I understand that it is very difficult. Therefore they live half lives or they live a lie. I think that it is important for us to reach out to them, to let them know that Singapore is changing and there is an entire community of people who accepts them for who they are.”

“Pink Dot is important to me because it is a place where our families and friends come together in support of the freedom to love. My mom came to Pink Dot for the first time last year and when she saw other mothers like herself, she didn’t feel so alone, and more importantly saw that I wasn’t alone. I hope that Singaporeans will all come together at Pink Dot to make a stand, for a truly inclusive Singapore, a place we can truly call home.”

Since Pink Dot started in 2009, attendance has grown from 2,500 to over 15,000 last year. It has become one of the most visible and well known events for inclusiveness and diversity in Singapore. It is a place where all Singaporeans – straight or LGBT – can come together to support the freedom to love.

“Over the years, we receive personal stories of LGBT people who stand across the road from Hong Lim Park, afraid to join us,” said Paerin Choa. “Part of Pink Dot is to let LGBT people know, we are here and Singapore is our home too. And the most important part of being home, is that you know you can be safe, happy and feel that sense of belonging.”

The Pink Dot 2013 Ambassadors’ Video can be viewed at this link [xxxx]. For the first time, the video features heartfelt interviews with the Pink Dot Ambassadors, who speak about their personal motivations for coming on board and why they feel a need to come out in support of the LGBT community.

Recent events have caused much grief to many of us. Issues surrounding being LGBT are once again cast in the limelight and being discussed in the media.
To Singapore’s LGBT Community and Friends,

Recent events have caused much grief to many of us. Issues surrounding being LGBT are once again cast in the limelight and being discussed in the media. Hateful words have been used, disinformation has been spread as fact, and our leaders’ positions do not appear to be evolving. While many of us are understandably hurt, even angered, by some insensitive comments that have been made, and there is fear that justice and equality may not prevail, it is important that we stay rational and keep calm.

There will be little to be gained from responding to vitriol with more vitriol. In the words of Gandhi, “Anger and intolerance are the enemies of correct understanding.” Let us not devolve into the very image of the angry and intolerant, whose hearts and minds we ought to win over through love and kindness. Misinformation is best countered rationally, with facts.

At times like this, it is especially difficult for those of us who are not yet ‘out’ and feel like we are living with stigma on our own. The issue may be debated among our peers – at the workplace, in school or in National Service – or even with family members at home. It may be placing undue pressure on those of us who fear being ‘outed’ if we simply took a stand.

Remember, you are not alone. There is a strong community of people – straight and LGBT – who understand what you are going through. It is important that we lend support to one another at this difficult time. While the resources are few, they are available, thanks to the efforts of our own community. You can find links to some of them below.

Let us also keep reminding ourselves that the two constitutional challenges on Section 377A of the Penal Code are ultimately judicial processes. They are set to be heard in the Courts in a few weeks. We should allow Justice to run its course and respect the sanctity of the Judiciary. We urge the community to stay calm and await the court’s decision. May justice prevail.

Meanwhile let us continue to reach out in our own personal capacities to those around us, to demonstrate and affirm that who we love should not make us less equal as sons and daughters of Singapore. And when opportunities arise for us to come together, let us be sure to stand up and be counted.
